waiting | melbourne maternity photographer

I have just had the busiest couple of months EVER since I began my little business in 2013 and of course when I am busy like that, I tend to drop off the social media, blogging, face of the earth kinda thing! I just don't seem to be able to do it all especially when you chuck a bit of life into the equation as well.

Anyway ... I'm back - for now! Now that my client schedule has settled down to a regular pace I hope to catch up on a bit of blogging and all the socials etc and get started on a couple of little projects I have been dreaming about for such a long time.

BUT - I have 2 beautiful daughters who are as of today, both overdue to have their babies! Life is about to get a whole other level of busy for this Nana and I have to say I just can't wait. Having grandchildren has been the most incredible experience!

The wild and woolly weather we have been having really hasn't been ideal for an outdoor maternity session for either of the girls, so instead Brittany trusted me at home to take a few pictures of her...

Did you know that I offer a complimentary maternity session to ALL clients that book a newborn lifestyle session with me. If you are pregnant & are interested in booking a newborn photography session please get in touch with me HERE. I would love to chat with you about your ideas for your own session.

wednesdays | melbourne lifestyle photographer

Life is so busy ... What with a busy client schedule & my work in SCN sometimes I feel totally overwhelmed. But then there is Wednesday. My favourite day of the week. On Wednesday Layla comes to hang out with me & then I am forced to stop. I don't do anything but play with her, tell stories, snuggle & now that she is walking we might play a bit of chasey. This week I also took a few quick snaps. The giggles are infectious and watching her observe her world around her is just fascinating. I feel so lucky that I am able to take the time to just watch her grow.

fresh 48 | melbourne newborn photographer

Life definitely got away from me over the last couple of weeks with a very busy client schedule & a ton of family stuff going on. If you follow me on social media you might just have seen a bit of my crazy life although I was even to busy for the socials!! Thankfully things have settled down for now and here I am ready to get back into my blogging!!

I want to share something very special with you today. Have you ever heard of FRESH 48 newborn photography sessions? Well ... they are absolutely my most favourite session in the entire world!! Why? Well it is simple really ... the session usually takes place within the first couple of days after baby is born and at that particular time, not only is your baby so deliciously new, but the heightened emotion and love between the parents and their newborn is absolutely palpable. And that is the type of image I just love to capture. Totally loved up & connected!

This session was captured at Epworth Freemasons Maternity Hospital in East Melbourne. The rooms at this hospital are just perfect for a session like this and in no time at all I captured this little family who welcomed a beautiful baby boy!

If you are pregnant and are looking for a newborn photographer for either a fresh 48 or in home newborn lifestyle session please get in touch with me HERE and we can have a chat about your ideas for your session. It is advisable to book in for your session while you are pregnant as I am often booked out weeks in advance.

emily | melbourne newborn photographer

On a very warm autumn morning I headed in to the burbs to visit Emily and her besotted parents. This newborn session was so delicious! Not only a beautiful space to photograph this new family in but a very connected couple totally in love with each other and their little baby girl.

I absolutely love newborn sessions at home. Being in a clients home tells so much more of their story as a new family, and because the sessions are so easy going & relaxed it doesn't take long before everyone is totally comfortable, forgets the camera, & is able to really connect with each other which makes beautiful intimate & meaningful images.

If you are pregnant & are interested in booking a newborn photography session please get in touch with me HERE. I would love to chat with you about your ideas for your own session.

the baby registry is here | melbourne newborn photographer

Great news! I am so excited to announce that I now have a baby registry so it makes it super easy for family and friends to give a gift of beautiful memories of your tiny newborn that will be treasured for a lifetime!

A baby registry doesn't have to be all about the cute little outfits and baby things anymore. The new baby registry provides gift givers an option that is truly meaningful and memorable for expecting parents. The gift of newborn photography is one that expecting parents will be able to cherish long after their bundle of joy has outgrown yet another cute outfit!

The registry is available to all parents-to-be that have a newborn session booked. Once registered,  I will then send out little cards to pop into the baby shower invites and/or a digital invite that can be emailed. The cards will have all the info on them to let family/friends know how to participate if they choose to. Gift certificates will then be applied toward your newborn photography session balance and/or product purchase.

Once purchased, gift certificates can either be mailed to the purchaser for them to give at the shower or even after baby is born, or we can mail the gift certificate directly to the parents-to-be! Certificates come as low as $25, and the purchaser can add as much as they need to reach their desired gift amount. Purchasing registry gift cards is made easy through our online shop button!  You can pay a visit HERE ...

If you have any questions about the Baby Registry, or you would like to book your own Newborn Photography session, please contact me HERE and lets chat!

a hearty home | melbourne newborn photographer

Did you see my Instagram stories yesterday while I was at work? Maybe you didn't know about my "other" job! In addition to being a newborn photographer I also work as a nurse in Special Care Nursery.

For those that don’t know, the nursery is a very important part of the maternity unit where babies are cared for if they are born early, are unwell or perhaps need a little help with feeding. I’ve been working with newborns & their families for such a long time now and I really love it so much. No matter how busy I get with my photography I just can’t seem to give it up!

Teeny newborn cuddles are a perk of the job but I also love the team I work with. They are an amazing bunch of people and I trust them implicitly which is so important in this job.

And ... I love working with the families as well.  Watching people becoming parents, gently guiding them on their way. It’s a privilege that I will never take for granted. I meet so many wonderful people.

Jade & Pete & their teeny tiny twin girls Madeline and Charlotte were no exception. They are such an awesome little family and we had a lot of laughs together during what can be a difficult and frustrating time. I am even more grateful that they then invited me into their "hearty" home to photograph them as a new family.

If you are pregnant and are looking for newborn photographer here in the Melbourne metro, bayside or Mornington Peninsula areas, please get in touch HERE and lets have a chat about your own session.

april catch up ...

One of the things on my list for this year was to give my little business some serious love. Particularly in the SEO department. One thing that is seriously lacking is my SEO and for those of you who don't know what that is, it simply means Search Engine Optimisation. By improving my SEO it will make it easier for more people to find me. I honestly had no idea how it all works - so I got some help.

Lovely Mel from Melanie Gunter Digital is a digital marketing guru and after spending a little time together she opened my eyes to a whole new world!

SEO & digital marketing can be so overwhelming and to be honest I didn't have any idea where to start! Mel gave me some ideas to get started with that will hopefully make my website a bit more visible and one of those tips was to blog more often. So lets make this a monthly catch up! I also have lots of projects that I am working on at the moment as well as a ton of newborn and family sessions that I haven't blogged yet ... so watch this space!

Thank you Mel for opening my eyes and I'm looking forward to learning so much more.

p.s While I have you here ... if you are thinking of updating your family photos or you have a project in mind that you think I can help with, don't be shy! Contact me HERE today and lets chat!

how to prepare for your in home lifestyle session | family lifestyle photographer | melbourne

For most people the thought of having a stranger come to their home and photograph them can be a little daunting, especially if you aren't exactly comfortable in front of a camera. You probably feel like your house is crap, you have nothing to wear and you worry that your kids will be absolutely out of control! Well I am here today to put your mind at ease, to give you the low down on what to expect and help you get prepared!

Lets start with the awkwardness of posing and the fear of the camera. It's a very real thing but with a lifestyle session the pressure is OFF! There will be no awkwardness or stiff poses. Instead there will be games and fun and laughter. There will be cuddles on the bed and tickles on the couch. With a little guidance from me, you will soon forget about the camera - that's a promise!! I love a chat & a good laugh, and that combined with many years of experience, enables me to gently direct you without you even noticing.

Now let's get your house sorted out! You absolutely do not have to have a home that is straight out of a magazine. If you do, well thats great. But it isn't necessary. Big or small, light or dark, modern or old, we will make it work and in fact no matter what your home looks like it will be the perfect backdrop for your session because it is the place where you will all easily relax & connect. It represents you as a family and when you look back in a few years time you will be so glad you had your session at home. There is very little you need to do to prepare your home for a lifestyle session. A quick tidy round to de-clutter and put things away that you don't want photographed is really all that is needed. When I arrive, I will get you (or maybe the kids!} to give me a little tour and from there we will work out what rooms we will use and where we have the best light etc. I generally use the master bedroom, nursery or kids rooms, and the main living area. Sometimes we might go outside too. I will possibly rearrange things a little to make sure we get a good composition and make the best use of the available light. And that's it ... too easy!

So now you are feeling pretty good hey? You feel relaxed about our time together, the house is sorted, now what to wear? I honestly have no real rules at all about this. Firstly I want you to be comfortable & I want you to feel good, so wearing what you like is really important. If I was going to give any advice it would be to dress for the situation ... so if you don't normally get around in a cocktail dress and heels, don't wear it. Another suggestion is to avoid clothing with busy graphics, advertising or heavy patterns as this can be a little distracting in your final images. Simple really!

And finally - the kids! You know the saying never work with children & animals, well there is a very good reason for that! Children are unpredictable and prone to laying on the floor sobbing or heading in an entirely different direction. And thats ok! It's normal. And I expect it. I have plenty of tips & tricks to get these little people doing exactly what I want and if that fails we do what they want! Either way, it will be ok.

Hopefully this blogpost has helped a little and put your mind at ease. Your session will be so much fun and a perfect opportunity to spend a couple of hours unplugged and all loved up together. What more could you ask for really? I look forward to hanging out with you at your session and if you haven't booked a session yet - GET ON IT!! Contact me here and lets get connected!!

Special thanks to the Devers family, featured below, for sharing their little beautiful little fambam with you all!

when your love makes a love of their own ...

I am so lucky in my job to be surrounded by so much love and good feeling pretty much all of the time. No matter if it is in my photography work, or my work as a nurse looking after newborns and their families, the vibe is generally a very positive one! As my own kids have got older and started lives of their own as adults I often will ask the grandparents that I meet "what's it like? Is it like when you have your own kids? Is the love the same?"

Well ... at the start of this year I got to find out first hand! My gorgeous Jess and her equally gorgeous man, Will, had their first baby and I was lucky enough to be invited in to their birth space to support them throughout the birth and their first few weeks at home. I still get all goosey thinking about it. It was the most amazing experience EVER!! It gave me a whole new respect for them as a couple and for my darling girl as a woman & mother. The love and connection between these two is just incredible and it goes without saying that they are both so in love with their baby girl.

As a grandparent I am totally smitten! Its an overwhelming love not just for this tiny human but for her mama as well. She is an amazing mother and I am just loving watching their little love story unfold...

beatrix | melbourne newborn photographer

I'm a big believer that things have a way of working out with the right people coming into your life at the right moment and for the right reasons. Sometimes it all just works. This family are very special to me ... I first photographed them when they had their first baby, Miss Thea-Rose, who has now proudly become a big sister. I cant exactly remember how they came to find me but I am so glad they did. That single day changed EVERYTHING for me as far as my photography goes! I was really struggling with the whole newborn on a beanbag thing and this family were so connected and loved up, the beanbag was quickly forgotten and we captured some of the most touching moments. Their images made my heart dance around in my chest and from that moment I just knew that lifestyle sessions were what I was meant to do!

Just a couple of years down the track and Miss Beatrix joins their story and I think you will see they are still just as connected as ever (insert heart eyes here)!!

winter | mornington peninsula family photographer

What has happened to summer?! We have had a few days that showed the promise of summer, got us all excited for the warmer days and then suddenly we are back in the chills of winter!! Crazy weather ... but to be truthful that is one of the things I love about Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula... the weather is always interesting!

No matter what the weather the beach is a wonderful place for a family session and as a Mornington Peninsula local one of my favourite beaches for photography sessions is along the McCrae foreshore as there are so many little spots for snuggly close "moments" as well as a lovely expanse of gorgeous beach for those fabulous wide shots!

I thought that I would share some images form a winter beach session I did a number of weeks ago. It was a funny old day and we had decided that with the exception of rain we would shoot no matter how wild it was. I just love how the beach changes from season to season and in these images you can see she has her winter dress on with all of the seaweed washed up on the shoreline from the stormy seas we have been having. The sand was COLD and the wind was woolly but we were suitably rugged up and for just a brief moment the dark and heavy clouds parted and we got some beautiful sunshine.

world gratitude day | melbourne family photographer

For many of you it may have gone unnoticed but this week we acknowledged "world gratitude day" on the 21st of September. The very first celebration of this day started in 1965 in Hawaii and every year since, its following has grown with the hope that by dedicating one day a year to this practise it will encourage more positivity, content, and a happier world.

I like to think that most of us practice gratitude daily, even if we are totally unaware that we are doing so - I know I try to. So my blog post today is about my gratitude with regard to my work and a very serious little boy named Harry.

I feel that photographs are a gift to our "future" family and the documentary style that I love not only tells future generations what we look like in the moment but also a little bit about us and the love that our family shares. I will be forever grateful and consider it such a privilege to be invited in to the every day lives of my clients and to capture that little glimpse of them as they are in that moment. Particularly when some of those moments are sometimes quite intimate. What makes my heart sing even louder is when I am invited back again and again to photograph them as their family grows and document them year after year.

Which brings me to Harry. This week I had an email from his mama to book in a family session to include Harrys new little brother, Tom. I am so excited to catch up with them all again and to meet little Tom. Seems like a perfect opportunity to share with you some of my favourite images from my previous session with Harry. And as you will see he was a VERY serious little man ...

mentor day with Amy ...

I know I'm not alone when I say that sometimes I find it really difficult to maintain my "mojo" and stay fresh when much of the time my work requires me to be on my own in front of a computer screen. There are so many opportunities for negative thoughts and good old self doubt to creep in - but that is a blog post for another day!

To try and stay as fresh and motivated as I can, I allocate myself a few professional development days and activities each year. They can be a variety of things such as group workshops, seminars, online classes etc. Just recently I had a 1:1 mentor session with a photographer that I have admired for quite some time, not only because I like her work, but even though we had never met, I thought I liked the way she worked ... and I wasn't disappointed.

My mentor day with Amy Rushbrook from Lark + Bear was fabulous and exactly what I needed. We spent the whole morning drinking coffee and chatting extensively about EVERYTHING! If I was going to take just one thing away from our day together it would be the importance of finding the right clients and being able to identify who they are.

So I got thinking about just who they are ... They are every day regular people. They are totally in love with their life and the people they have built that life with. They are creative and adventurous and don't mind taking risks. They are generous, hard working and are looking for an experience that leaves them feeling GREAT! They want their images to reflect real life and who they are as people ... No matter how messy it might get. Because real life isn't perfect.

My day with Amy ended with a wonderful session at the beautiful family home of Steph. It couldn't have been more perfect. Even though it was a cold and grey old day, we had a balance of beautiful light and shadow and little Alice had chosen her outfit especially for our visit. She reminded me so much of one of my own children at a similar age - so much energy and independence and not to mention the CURLS! I was happy watching Amy work her magic but did manage to capture a little snapshot of our afternoon ..... Enjoy!

levi | melbourne family photographer

Building my new website has meant that I have had to go back through galleries of families I have had sessions with over the past couple of years and I have just loved re-visiting these so much that I decided to share some of my favourites.

This newborn lifestyle session took place at home in beautiful bayside Melbourne, late morning, after the older kids had finished their morning activities! That is the beauty of an in home session. It is so easy to fit in around a busy family schedule.

Most newborn photographers will tell you that the ideal time to get your photos done is in the first couple of weeks after birth, but with a lifestyle session "the perfect age" really isn't important. No matter what the age we will always capture some wonderful images and, at six weeks of age this session with Levi was evidence of that!!

There was a wonderful energy in this family with the older kids very keen for a little "show & tell" of some of their favourite games and of course to show me around their home which I just L O V E D! Bec (Mum) has an incredible sense of style as you can no doubt tell just by looking at that amazing retro sofa!! The bassinet is a real vintage piece and just so gorgeous! And the dining table? An original hand made by Scott (Dad). The whole house had such a relaxed vibe and reminded me a little of my childhood.

Levi was absolutely adorable and I could quite happily have popped him in my bag and taken him home! (Did I say that out loud? lol) Being six weeks of age meant that he was wide awake and ready for action and there was certainly plenty of THAT! The older kids loved jumping and wrestling on mum and dads big bed. Levis beautiful bright eyes just beamed and he was such a relaxed little man, not at all bothered by the exuberance of his older siblings.

I guess that is just the natural order of things isn't it? As the third child you just have to go with the flow ...

elise | melbourne newborn photographer

There are so many wonderful things about my job and one of them is having the opportunity to check out other peoples homes! I have an absolute obsession with interiors, styling, renovating etc so its only natural that I would love seeing what other people are doing with their own spaces. Right?

Generally with an in-home lifestyle session I will have no idea what the space or the light is like and that would totally freak me out in the early days. These days I actually get a little excited! I love the challenge of being a natural light photographer and having to make do with whatever light is available.

So on a gloomy old June day in Melbourne, I headed off to my session with little Elise and her family wondering what I would find. Well ... natural light photographers D R E A M !! As I pulled up outside my insides were doing a happy dance! A brand new home, filled with beautiful light and lots and lots of my favourite colour ... WHITE! (I know, I know ... white isn't a colour but its still my fave!). I could go on about the gorgeous sheer curtains, the balcony garden of succulents but I wont ...

Elise is a Special Care Nursery "graduate" and I was lucky enough to get to know her and her beautiful family during her stay in the nursery where I work as a nurse a few days a week. Such a gorgeous family and I am so honoured that they chose me as their photographer to document their early days as a new family.

I think you will agree, this little family have created a beautiful love filled, tranquil vibe ...

nathaniel | melbourne newborn photographer

A chilly old day in Melbourne today and the perfect time to sit down at my computer and get stuck into some blogging. I am so excited to share some of the beautiful newborn and family sessions I have had over the past little while and this one in particular was one of my favourites for 2016.

What makes it a favourite? Well to start with the house was superb!!  An unassuming cream brick house in Melbourne and once inside it was filled to the brim with love and life and everything that makes you feel like you have stepped deep into someones life. This was a home that was so unique and quirky to this family. Christina has an incredible eye for putting beautiful collections of art and books and family treasures together, giving old things a new lease of life and putting her own personal touch to absolutely everything. I just loved it!

These guys were so comfortable with themselves and each other and it made the session such a pleasure. We chatted and chatted and it honestly felt like we had known each other for a very long time but that is just the type of people they were. Relaxed, easy going and very very welcoming. Nathaniel, our focus for the morning, was so wide awake. In fact I think the couple of pictures we got of him "sleeping" were really just flukes as he just happened to have his eyes closed as I clicked the shutter. Gotta be happy with that! He was a very busy teeny tiny boy who has a bit of work to do to fill up his skin ... And that is exactly what he wanted to do all morning. FEED FEED FEED. Just as well they have a big comfy couch because I think Christina is going to be spending a lot of time there while he works on filling up his legs! Without doubt this little man has the very best newborn knees I have ever seen ...

If you would like to book a lifestyle session of your own please don't hesitate to get in touch ...

welcome ...

Welcome welcome welcome to my new website and my very first blog post!

The last couple of years have been a bit of a mixed bag for me, what with building our house which took up a lot of my time, and then last year getting sick. Even though those things meant that my photography had to take a back seat for a little time, it did give me opportunity to really reflect on where I was headed and how I was going to get there.

Recently I finally made the decision to ditch the studio sessions and just commit to 100% lifestyle sessions and I couldn't be happier. I feel like an enormous weight has been lifted off my shoulders as I now have the freedom to explore and create the imagery that makes my heart sing! I am just so excited to share with you this genre of family/newborn photography and look forward to your feedback and comments.

I am thrilled to bits to have this beautiful new space to share the images from some of the gorgeous families I have been lucky to have worked with and if you have been following along with me for some time you might just find yourself here somewhere!
